How to install Claude SEO, step by step

Work from top to bottom. Each grey box is one command: copy the whole line, paste it into the terminal window and press Enter.

Never used a terminal? Read this first (1 minute)

A terminal is a window where you type commands for your computer. You do not need to understand them, just copy and paste them exactly.

  1. Windows: press the Windows key, type "PowerShell", then press Enter.
  2. macOS: press Command + Space, type "Terminal", then press Enter.
  3. Linux: press Ctrl + Alt + T.
  4. Copy a command from the guide, right-click inside the window you just opened to paste it (macOS: Command + V), then press Enter.
  5. Wait for the command to finish (the cursor blinks again on a new line) before running the next one.

Lines starting with # are notes; you do not need to copy them. If red error text appears, check the common errors section at the end of the guide.

1. What is Claude SEO?

Claude SEO is a plugin for Claude Code that gives a website an SEO health check when you type a command. SEO is the work of making a site easier to find on Google and other search engines. You hand the plugin a web address; it looks at the technical side, content quality, structured data (schema) and how likely the page is to appear in AI-generated search answers, then returns a report with a prioritised to-do list.

It can stand in for the "first audit" you would otherwise pay a consultant for, or buy a monthly tool to get. The plugin itself is free and open source under the MIT licence, with no per-domain pricing. What you do pay for is the Claude Code account it runs in.

To be plain: Claude SEO is not an app with a user interface. It runs inside Claude Code, which means inside a terminal window. You do not need to know how to program to type the commands and read the reports, but you do need to install a few things listed in section 2.

A good fit if:

  • You have a website (a blog, a shop, a company site) and want to know where it is weak.
  • You are a freelance SEO or work at an agency and need a quick audit before advising a client.
  • You already have Claude Code, or are willing to subscribe.

Not a fit yet if:

  • You want a web page where you paste a link and press a button. There is no hosted version.
  • You only have a phone. A computer is required.
  • You need complete backlink or keyword-volume data. Those depend on outside services (Ahrefs, DataForSEO and so on) that you must have your own accounts for.
  • You use Codex rather than Claude Code. The author maintains a separate port called Codex SEO at https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/codex-seo

2. What do you need?

  • A computer running Windows, macOS or Linux, with an internet connection.
  • Claude Code. Anthropic's AI assistant that runs in a terminal. The plugin install in section 3 needs Claude Code 1.0.33 or newer. Installation steps and paid plans are at https://code.claude.com
  • Python 3.10 or newer. Python is the programming language the plugin's analysis scripts run on. The project recommends 3.11 or later because 3.10 is close to end of life. Download it from https://www.python.org. On Windows, tick "Add python.exe to PATH" during setup.
  • Git (only for the manual install, method 2). A tool for downloading source code from GitHub. Get it from https://git-scm.com

Optional:

  • Google API credentials if you want real data from PageSpeed, Search Console and Google Analytics. The setup wizard is /seo google setup; check Google's own pages for current quotas and pricing. Without them the plugin still works; page-speed figures are just lab estimates.
  • Paid third-party accounts (DataForSEO, Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Profound) if you want to switch on the matching extensions.

Note: Since version 2.3.1, five of the plugin's agents run on Opus, Claude's more expensive model. The README says outright that a full site audit therefore uses more of your allowance than it used to.

3. Step-by-step installation

Step 1: Start Claude Code

Open a terminal, type this and press Enter:

claude

You should see the Claude Code welcome screen and a prompt to type into. If your computer does not recognise the claude command, Claude Code is not installed yet; go back to section 2.

Step 2: Add the plugin source and install

Type these two lines inside Claude Code, one at a time, waiting for each to finish:

/plugin marketplace add AgriciDaniel/claude-seo
/plugin install claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo

It worked if Claude Code confirms the marketplace was added and the plugin installed, with no error lines.

Step 3: Run the one-time setup

/seo setup

This creates a private Python environment for the plugin and downloads the Chromium browser, which it uses to read JavaScript-heavy pages and take screenshots. Nothing is installed into your system-wide Python. Expect this step to take a few minutes because of the downloads.

Step 4: Check it

/seo doctor

This command only reads and reports; it changes nothing. You are set when every item shows as ready. If only the Chromium part fails, the plugin can still analyse ordinary pages.

Method 2: Manual install on Windows (PowerShell)

Use this if the plugin route does not work. It needs Git.

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo.git
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File claude-seo\install.ps1

The first line downloads the source into a folder called claude-seo. The second runs the installer. The author chose this approach on purpose so that you can open install.ps1 and read it before running it.

Method 2: Manual install on macOS / Linux

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo.git
bash claude-seo/install.sh

After a manual install, open Claude Code and type /seo. You should get a help message or be asked for a web address.

4. First use

Still inside Claude Code, start with a single page because it is quick. Replace the address with one of your own:

/seo page https://example.com/about

Claude Code reads that page and comes back with comments on the title, description, heading structure, content, schema and images.

Once you are comfortable, run a full site audit:

/seo audit https://example.com

Now the plugin splits the work across several agents running in parallel. The README estimates 10 to 15 minutes per audit; a large site takes longer because up to 500 pages are read. The result is a set of Markdown report files saved on your own computer (for example FULL-AUDIT-REPORT.md), with an overall score from 0 to 100 and a list of fixes in priority order. Each recommendation also says how you would check whether it worked.

A few other commands worth trying:

You want toCommand
Check structured data (schema)/seo schema https://example.com
See how citable the page is for AI search/seo geo https://example.com
Audit the technical side/seo technical https://example.com
Assess content quality/seo content https://example.com
Local SEO (Google Business Profile, reviews)/seo local https://example.com
Connect Google data/seo google setup

The complete command list is at https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo/blob/main/docs/COMMANDS.md

5. Common problems and fixes

Claude Code does not recognise /seo

  • Cause: the plugin is not installed or has not been loaded.
  • Fix: type /plugin list and look for claude-seo. If it is missing, repeat the two commands in Step 2. Then quit Claude Code and start it again.

ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'requests' (or another missing module)

  • Cause: the plugin's private Python environment was not fully created.
  • Fix: run /seo doctor to see what is missing, then /seo setup to rebuild it. The documentation asks you not to install individual packages yourself with pip.

Windows says python is not recognized

  • Cause: Python is not installed, or the PATH box was not ticked during setup.
  • Fix: reinstall Python from https://www.python.org with "Add to PATH" ticked, reopen the terminal, rerun the installer and then /seo doctor.

Executable doesn't exist when taking screenshots or reading JavaScript pages

  • Cause: the Chromium browser has not been downloaded.
  • Fix: run /seo setup again, then /seo doctor.

Agent 'seo-technical' not found

  • Cause: the sub-agents were not loaded.
  • Fix: for the plugin install, check /plugin list and reinstall claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo.

Request timed out after 30 seconds

  • Cause: the target site is slow, your connection is weak, or the site blocks automated requests.
  • Fix: try again later and check your network. Some sites block automated tools and there is no way around that.

A full audit takes far too long

  • Cause: the site has many pages or responds slowly.
  • Fix: use /seo page on specific addresses instead of /seo audit.

Permission denied when scripts run on macOS / Linux

  • Fix (manual install):
chmod +x ~/.claude/skills/seo/scripts/*.py

6. Uninstalling / updating

Removing the plugin install

Type inside Claude Code:

/plugin uninstall claude-seo@agricidaniel-claude-seo
/plugin marketplace remove AgriciDaniel/claude-seo

Removing a manual install

macOS / Linux:

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo.git
bash claude-seo/uninstall.sh

On Windows, the repository ships an uninstall.ps1 for manual installs; run it the same way you ran install.ps1. The uninstaller removes the main skill, its sub-skills and the plugin's agents from your .claude folder.

If you stored Google API credentials, they live in ~/.config/claude-seo/; delete that folder if you no longer need them.

Updating

The README has no separate update procedure. The simple route for the plugin install is to run the two uninstall commands above, repeat Step 2, then run /seo setup to refresh the environment. The latest release when this guide was written was v2.4.1 (29 September 2026); see https://github.com/AgriciDaniel/claude-seo/releases

7. Frequently asked questions

Does it cost money? The plugin is free, and it imposes no usage limits of its own. You pay for Claude Code. Extensions that connect to DataForSEO, Ahrefs, Profound or SE Ranking need your own accounts with those services and are entirely optional.

Does it need an internet connection? Yes. The plugin has to fetch the pages you want audited, and Claude Code needs a connection too.

Does my data get sent anywhere? According to the project's PRIVACY file: the core makes no third-party API calls, has no telemetry or usage tracking, and saves reports on your machine. It only contacts the website you ask it to audit. When you switch on an extension, the addresses you analyse are sent to that service. Separately, whatever you do in Claude Code still passes through Anthropic under Claude Code's own policies.

Do I need Google API keys? No. Without them, Core Web Vitals are lab estimates only and indexing status is inferred from signals on the page.

Does it replace Screaming Frog or Ahrefs? The author says plainly that it is not meant to. Screaming Frog crawls links deeper and faster; Ahrefs has its own backlink index. Claude SEO is strongest at pulling findings together, explaining them and suggesting what to do next.
