How to install GenOffice, step by step
Work from top to bottom. Each grey box is one command: copy the whole line, paste it into the terminal window and press Enter.
Never used a terminal? Read this first (1 minute)
A terminal is a window where you type commands for your computer. You do not need to understand them, just copy and paste them exactly.
- Windows: press the Windows key, type "PowerShell", then press Enter.
- macOS: press Command + Space, type "Terminal", then press Enter.
- Linux: press Ctrl + Alt + T.
- Copy a command from the guide, right-click inside the window you just opened to paste it (macOS: Command + V), then press Enter.
- Wait for the command to finish (the cursor blinks again on a new line) before running the next one.
Lines starting with # are notes; you do not need to copy them. If red error text appears, check the common errors section at the end of the guide.
1. What is GenOffice?
GenOffice is a free, open-source office suite meant to replace Microsoft Office on Windows, macOS and Linux. It opens and saves real Word (.docx), Excel (.xlsx) and PowerPoint (.pptx) files, and also edits PDF, Markdown and HTML. Every document has an AI panel next to it: you type a request, the AI edits the document itself and shows you what it changed, with a button to undo.
According to the project, the apps are entirely free, with no trial and no paid tier for the software (Apache-2.0 license). Editing happens on your own computer. The AI features need an internet connection and one of two things: a Genspark sign-in, or your own API key.
A good fit if:
- You need to open and edit Word, Excel and PowerPoint files without buying Microsoft Office.
- You want AI to rewrite a passage, build a spreadsheet with working formulas, or draft a slide deck from one sentence.
- You need to convert PDF to Word, Excel or PowerPoint on your own machine, without uploading the file.
Not a good fit if:
- You only use a phone. GenOffice is a desktop application with no mobile version.
- You need a browser-based editor where several people type at once, like Google Docs. The official documentation does not describe such a feature.
- Your computer runs Windows 7/8 or a macOS version older than 11.
2. What you need first
Computer and operating system (from the official download table):
| Operating system | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Windows (most PCs, Intel/AMD) | Windows 10 or newer |
| Windows on Arm (Snapdragon X and similar) | Windows 11 on Arm |
| macOS on Apple Silicon or Intel | macOS 11 or newer |
| Linux Debian/Ubuntu | x86_64, glibc 2.34+ (Ubuntu 22.04 or newer) |
| Linux Fedora/RHEL/openSUSE | x86_64, glibc 2.34+ (Fedora 35+, RHEL 9+, Leap 15.6+) |
| Other Linux (AppImage) | x86_64, glibc 2.34+, FUSE 2 |
Download size: the 0.11.0 installers are roughly 140 to 150 MB on Windows and roughly 180 MB on macOS (sizes of the release files at the time of writing).
Nothing else to install first. No Python, Node.js or Docker.
Accounts and API keys (only for AI features):
- Genspark sign-in: nothing to configure. The README does not state pricing or limits for this option; check https://genoffice.ai/.
- Your own API key (a secret string for calling an AI model): GenOffice accepts keys for Claude, OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, OpenRouter and many other providers, including model servers running on your own machine. The provider bills you by usage.
If you only edit documents and never use the AI, you need no account at all.
3. Step-by-step installation
Step 1: Open the official download page
Go to https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice/releases/latest and scroll to Assets (the list of attached files). The latest release when this guide was written is v0.11.0, published on 28 September 2026.
Step 2: Pick the right file for your computer
| Your computer | File to download |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Windows PC | GenOfficeSetup-v0.11.0-x64.exe |
| Windows on Arm | GenOfficeSetup-v0.11.0-arm64.exe |
| Mac with an Apple chip (M1 or later) | GenOffice-0.11.0-arm64.dmg |
| Mac with an Intel chip | GenOffice-0.11.0.dmg |
| Ubuntu/Debian | genoffice_0.11.0_amd64.deb |
| Fedora/RHEL/openSUSE | genoffice-0.11.0.x86_64.rpm |
| Other Linux | GenOffice-0.11.0.AppImage |
The version number in the file names changes with each release.
Note: Not sure which Windows PC you have? Open Settings → System → About and read "System type". If it says "x64-based processor", download the
x64file.
Step 3 (Windows): Run the installer
Double-click the .exe you downloaded and follow the prompts. The Windows installers are code-signed, so you should not normally see an "unknown publisher" warning.
What success looks like: GenOffice appears in the Start menu.
Step 3 (macOS): Drag to Applications
Double-click the .dmg, then drag the GenOffice icon into the Applications folder. The macOS installers are signed as well.
What success looks like: GenOffice shows up in Launchpad and opens normally.
Step 3 (Linux): Install from the terminal
Open a terminal in the folder that holds the downloaded file.
Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt install ./genoffice_0.11.0_amd64.deb
Fedora/RHEL:
sudo dnf install ./genoffice-0.11.0.x86_64.rpm
openSUSE:
sudo zypper install ./genoffice-0.11.0.x86_64.rpm
AppImage (runs in place, no install). Install FUSE 2 first; on Ubuntu 24.04 the package is called libfuse2t64, on older releases libfuse2:
sudo apt install libfuse2
chmod +x GenOffice-0.11.0.AppImage
./GenOffice-0.11.0.AppImage
What success looks like: with .deb and .rpm, GenOffice is added to the applications menu; with the AppImage, the app window opens straight away.
4. First use
Step 1: Open the app and read the first notice
On first launch GenOffice shows an onboarding screen that includes a notice about anonymous usage statistics (see section 7 for how to turn them off). Then you reach the home screen, where you create new documents or search your files by name and by content.
Step 2: Open an existing Word file
Open any .docx on your computer. It appears laid out as it would be in Word. Change a few words and save. GenOffice rewrites only the parts you edited and leaves the rest of the file untouched, so the document still opens normally in Microsoft Word.
Step 3: Turn on the AI
Go to Settings → AI and do one of the following:
- Sign in with Genspark, or
- Choose the provider you have (for example Claude, OpenAI, Gemini or DeepSeek) and paste your API key.
Step 4: Ask the AI for something specific
Return to your document, open the AI panel and type a request such as "Make the introduction shorter". The AI edits the document directly. Each AI turn is a snapshot you can roll back with one click. With Track changes on, the edits arrive as Word-style revisions.
More things to try:
- In a spreadsheet: ask for a summary sheet. You get real formulas (for example
SUMIF), not pasted numbers. - In Slides: describe a presentation in one sentence and the AI drafts the slides as an editable
.pptx. - In PDF: use PDF Converter → PDF to Word to turn a PDF into a
.docxon your own machine.
5. Common errors and fixes
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The Windows installer will not run or reports incompatibility | You downloaded the arm64 build for an Intel/AMD PC, or the reverse | Check "System type" as in Step 2 and download the correct file |
| The AppImage will not start and mentions FUSE | FUSE 2 is not installed | Install libfuse2 (libfuse2t64 on Ubuntu 24.04) and try again |
| The AppImage gives "Permission denied" | The file is not marked as executable | Run chmod +x on it as in Step 3 |
| The AI panel does not answer | No Genspark sign-in, no API key, or no network | Check your connection, then open Settings → AI and sign in or paste a key |
Typing genoffice in a terminal gives "command not found" | The command-line tool lives inside the app and is not on your PATH | Open Settings → Integrations, which prints the exact path of the command on your machine |
| A scanned PDF converted on Linux has no editable text | The docs mention system text recognition (OCR) for scans on macOS and Windows only | Do the conversion on a macOS or Windows machine |
| An older Linux system refuses to install it | glibc is older than 2.34 | Upgrade to one of the releases listed in section 2 |
For anything else, report it at https://github.com/genspark-ai/genoffice/issues
6. Uninstalling and updating
Updating
GenOffice has in-app updates. You can also download the newest installer from the Releases page and install it over the old version. On Linux, install the new .deb or .rpm with the same command as in Step 3.
Uninstalling
The README has no uninstall section, so use your operating system's normal method:
- Windows: Settings → Apps → Installed apps, find GenOffice and choose Uninstall.
- macOS: drag GenOffice from Applications to the Trash.
- Linux (AppImage): delete the AppImage file.
- Linux (deb/rpm): remove it with your distribution's package manager. For example on Ubuntu/Debian:
sudo apt remove genoffice
Your documents are ordinary files on disk and are not deleted when you remove the app.
7. Frequently asked questions
Does it cost money?
The apps are free, with no trial and no paid tier for the software. Costs can only arise on the AI side, if you use a paid API key from a model provider.
Does it work offline?
Editing, saving and converting run entirely on your computer and need no network. The AI features (assistants, web search, image tools) need a connection.
Are my documents sent anywhere?
Opening, editing, saving and converting all happen locally. Content leaves the machine only when you use the AI, and then it goes to the provider you chose. Separately, official builds send anonymous usage statistics by default (for example an app-launch event, or the extension of a file you open). According to the privacy document these never include document content, file names, file paths or email addresses. Turn them off under Settings → General → Send anonymous usage statistics.
Will files made in GenOffice open in Microsoft Office?
Yes. GenOffice saves native .docx, .xlsx and .pptx, and keeps every part you did not edit byte-for-byte.
Can GenOffice edit PDFs?
Yes. It edits text and images inside the page using the original fonts, and converts PDF to Word, Excel and PowerPoint on your device.
